Seven Classic Blogging Missteps

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010 by Tara Sybrant

Whether or not you are an experienced blogger there are some pitfalls that are easy to fall into when creating posts for your blog. Some of these are easy to avoid, such as duplicating content, not adding links and not allowing for comments.

Duplicate Content

When you are writing a blog on a consistent basis, the pressure to come up with unique content can be overwhelming at times and the temptation to copy an article from somewhere else can be tempting. You might be thinking, “It won’t hurt anyone, no one will know.” While this might actually be true for your human readers, search engines are very smart and are programmed to search for duplicate content. While your site will not technically be “penalized” for it, you will find that your site will be filtered from the search results. So instead of copying and pasting the article, take a few minutes to gather your thoughts and write a short summary with a link to the original article.

Little to No Links

In the same way the search engines use inbound links to determine the credibility of your website in the indexing process, your readers see the use of relevant links to additional information a way to determine how accurate or relevant your information is. Where did you get the idea for the post? Did you read an article about the extension of the First Time Home Buyer Credit on CNN that inspired your post on how that will affect buyers in your town? Add an link to it! If you are you introducing a concept that your readers may not be familiar with, linking to an eloquently written definition or explanation will not only provide you with the link but the credibility you are looking for.

Too Hard to Read

It is a known fact that the attention span of the average person is short and even shorter when it comes to reading online. Long paragraphs of text without visuals to engage readers can be paramount to torture! There is a great article online that asks “Is your website ready for the 5 second attention span challenge?” The fix to this one is easy; include pictures and keep your paragraphs short enough to keep your reader engaged.

What’s in it for the Reader?

We must never forget when writing every single blog post that readers will be asking themselves “What’s in it for me?”. Incorporating value to your reader comes in many forms including education (like this post), amusement or entertainment, or some sort of offer that has something in it for them.

Missing You

Think about the blogs that you like to read. What keeps you coming back? More than the information, there is a personality behind the words that speaks to you, that keeps you engaged. One of my favorite blogs is written for women geeks, www.GeekSugar.com and more than satisfying my addiction to the latest and greatest in technology, the writer(s) make you feel at ease with the information. That and I don’t feel so alone loving my gadgets!

No Comments No Go!

Blogs are an interactive medium by their nature, designed to create a dialog between author and audience.  To refuse to allow comments makes your blog a one-way communication medium where it feels more like you are on a soap box than being open to engagement with your readers. Most blog platforms have the ability to require that you approve or reject a comment before it goes live on the site. You can use this feature to weed out spam or otherwise harmful or irrelevant comments.

The Ultimate Sin – Not Blogging Frequently Enough

I am the first one to admit that I am guilty of this. I get caught up in all the things that I have to do and blogging goes to the back burner. I am going to work on writing more frequently in 2010. Effective blogging means that there needs to be a consistency to your posts. Not only is a regular posting schedule good for your SEO, it keeps your readership engaged. There is however a balance between writing so frequently that your readers can’t keep up, get frustrated and stop reading all together, and writing so infrequently that your readers lose interest all together. A couple of times a week would be ideal, but once a week also works.

One last thing to remember, there is no one perfect blog so don’t that you have to be perfect to blog. Keep writing.

Agents Have A Lot To Blog About

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009 by Joe Lininger

Is blogging a chore? Blogging doesn’t have to be difficult, especially when you’re sharing good news. Sometimes you just need a little inspiration. We’ve got some great blog ideas for your consideration as we roll into the summer selling season:

  • Promote Your Market Those “in the know” are taking advantage of today’s favorable market conditions. Low interest rates, affordable home prices, and stabilizing inventories have created a lot of opportunity. Share what’s happening in your neck of the woods. Sellers have a larger pool of buyers this time of year, and buyers have a terrific selection of well priced homes. This is a great time to be in real estate.
  • First Time Home Buyer Tax Credit. Recent news from the Department of Housing and Urban development is a real gift to our housing markets. Explain to first time buyers how they can come out ahead. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that people need to know about!
  • Record Low Interest Rates. It’s hard to know how long these interest rates will last, but you know it’s only a matter of time before they head back up. Five percent rates make nicer homes affordable to more people. If you’ve been thinking about moving up, now be your best chance!
  • Neighborhood profiles and current events. Great weather means there are great things going on everywhere. By plugging in and promoting your community, you appeal to web visitors as a neighborhood expert. Use this time to take pictures, post some video, and show others what your love about your area. Let your enthusiasm shine through – it can be contagious!

Writing on any of these topics can provide a wealth of great discussion points for your web visitors. The more you share, the more you are seen as the local expert. Search engines love a relevant website, and real estate buyers and sellers appreciate a knowledgeable agent!

Five Types of Blog Posts

Friday, February 27th, 2009 by Tara Sybrant

You don’t have to be a professional writer to write a blog that people want to read. A blog just like a newspaper or magazine should incorporate a variety of different posts. You wouldn’t want to read a newspaper or magazine that was all editorial content and no news or feature stories – so approach your blog in the same way.

Let’s talk about ways to create a mixture of different types of posts to engage your reader and bring them back again and again. We can think of posts are like items on a menu, each one having a distinct flavor or feel about it, but each one appetizing in its own way. Keep in mind that, just like items on a menu not all of your posts will appeal to all of your readers – and that is okay.

The Appetizer Post is a short, sweet post that leaves the reader wanting more.

This is the post you write when you don’t have a lot of time to write but you really want to get out some information. Use the appetizer post to talk about things to come; like upcoming promotion your office is planning around the holidays, or a charity event you’re sponsoring where the article gives the basic information. Another way to utilize this post is to summarize an article you want to share. We all read continually and often find articles we find interesting – write a few sentences summarizing the article and provide a link to the article, and you’re done.

The Soup & Salad post can be a meal on its own, but could also go nicely with a main dish.

Give your readers something to think about. Ask thought provoking question and give your answers. This type of post can help present yourself as a thought leader, not only in your industry but in your community as well. Is there a proposed bond measure for education in your area that you have strong feelings about – tell your readers why you feel the way you do and ask them how they feel.

A Meat & Potatoes Post is a hearty meal, a post that can stand on its own. This post requires a lot of thought, time and effort to build. Pick your topics well; making sure that it is something that your readers will truly enjoy. This post should be well researched and include links to outside sources and the resources you used to gather your information. Give this post the attention it deserves and it will serve you well in the end.

There is always a Hot and Spicy Entrée on the menu, and adding one to your mix of posts is a good idea too. This post contains your bold or controversial statements or thoughts. The whole idea of this post is to get people talking, start fires, and engage your audience. A word of caution, use sparingly and be prepared to defend your comments!

Everyone loves the sweet stuff, so don’t hesitate to add the Desert Posts.  This is the fun stuff; the sweet part of blogging. These are the posts where you get to interject your personality, show your sense of humor and just have fun.

With all types of posts, remember to add the element of visual engagement for your readers including images and even videos, where appropriate. Remember you don’t have to be a professional writer to write a blog – just try and keep your reader in mind and try to have some fun with it. The more you enjoy writing your blog, the more it will show in your writing and the more people will enjoy reading it!
